Airstream Polishing with the BuffPro

airstream

Do you spend the summer traveling in your RV? Are you on a mission to restore your vintage airstream? Either way, your RV or airstream is a huge investment, which means you need the proper equipment to combat oxidation, holograms, and swirl marks.

  • Clean the surface of your airstream or RV with warm water and a mild detergent.
  • Apply a strip or two of polish to the surface.
  • Set the BuffPro buffer to the lowest setting (1) and spread the polish over the area you intend to buff.
  • Once you spread the polish, increase the speed of your BuffPro buffer and slowly move it back and forth until the surface is well polished and the compound is gone.
  • Wipe away any excess polish with a microfiber towel.

How to Winterize an RV

how to winterize an rv

Do you wonder how to winterize an RV before the cold weather arrives? The harsh winter weather and its freezing temperatures are hard on us all, but it can be devastating to an un-winterized RV. A smart move some RV owners make is getting an early jump on winterizing when it gets into the low 40s, because it’s more pleasant doing that work when it’s fairly warm than when it’s freezing. It’s not a good idea to wait any longer than when temps reach a sustained 32 degrees and below for more than a few hours.

The biggest issue, and the most common, is freezing that occurs within the RV’s plumbing system, which offers many spots for water and moisture to live and can be very costly for you in the spring. In addition to winterizing the RV plumbing system, you need prepare the RV’s interior and exterior for the cold winter months too.

With that in mind, here is a good checklist for how to winterize an RV this coming cold season:

Drain All the Water

You don’t want water to freeze, expand, and then blow up inside water tanks or blow one of your water lines off connectors.

  • Drain your water tanks
  • Drain water heater (Make sure you wait until the temperature and pressure come down before draining)
  • Drain water lines

Remove and Bypass the Water Filters & Water Heater

Before adding antifreeze, you need to remove and bypass any inline water filters you have to prevent damage. You may need to buy a water heater bypass kit, if one is not already installed on the water heater.

Add Antifreeze to Your RV

Pump non-toxic RV antifreeze into your tanks, lines, and down your traps. The amount of antifreeze depends on your plumbing setup, but 2-3 gallons is normally enough.

Check the Roof Seals & Under the RV

Get on the roof and make sure there are no holes or leaks. Any leaks, cracks, or holes will need to be addressed. This prevents costly interior damage as well as damage to your roof.

Check the underside of your RV. Get underneath your RV and look for holes or other areas that rodents could nest in. Plug any holes. This prevents damage from pests to your insulation, wood, and water lines.

Freshen Up the Interior

Many RV owners place peppermint tea bags throughout the interior of their RV over the winter. Not only does this make your RV smell nice come spring, but the peppermint also serves as a deterrent for pests.

Disconnect the Battery

Disconnect, remove, and place your RV’s battery on your battery tender. A battery tender will help to keep your battery operational over long periods of inactivity.

Polish & Wax the Exterior

Start by picking out a reliable RV polish and wax for proper maintenance. This will help you protect your investment and ensure that it continues to look its best, as it can protect most parts of your RV from scratches and other forms of damage. Picking a wax with UV protection can even help in protecting your RV from the damaging effects of the sun’s rays as well as other forms of environmental damage.

With its massive size and hard to reach spaces, it can take a long time to remove the oxidation, light swirls, spider webs, and light scratches that your RV has sustained during the travel season.

But the BuffPro Buffer can make polishing your RV an easy affair. It has an easy-to-use high speed, adjustable system gives you the heat and friction for polishing your RV to a high shine. The dual pistol grip handles are designed to minimize awkward wrist positioning when polishing. Furthermore, BuffPro will not leave swirl marks or holograms because the axial motion of the buffing pad eliminates circular micro marring, leaving a professional swirl-free shine.

The before (left) and after (right) photos below show the shine that you can expect in half the time of regular buffing products.

Cover Up

Cover your RV and tires to protect from rain and snow. This protects your tires from dry rotting. Do not use a tarp! It is not breathable and traps moisture.

Proper RV/Airstream Maintenance

rv maintenanceDo you spend the summer near the beach or winters in the desert in your RV? As you know, saltwater, rain, mud, and other elements can take a huge toll on the exterior of your RV or Airstream. Whether you choose to use your RV/Airstream as a year-round home or occasional vacation house, it’s a huge investment that requires proper RV maintenance for enjoyment and value.

In addition to basic maintenance such as oil and air filter changes, you also need to pay attention to the exterior as trailers, RV’s and Airstreams will become significantly oxidized if they aren’t polished regularly. It’s tempting to ignore this daunting task as it can take an entire weekend and you still have those annoying holograms and swirl marks that just don’t ever seem to go away. Fortunately, there is an easy, swirl-free solution – and it’s endorsed by industry professionals.

“The BuffPro axial buffer has been a part of my vintage trailer polishing profession for almost three years and is the one piece of equipment that my customers refer to when they make inquiries about hiring me. They say, “You use that drum buffer, the BuffPro, right?” They ask that because they know they’re going to get a shine that’s going to be swirl free. Not only does it create a swirl-free finish, it cuts my polishing man hour time drastically.” – Tim McNutt, Tim’s Airstream Polishing, Martinez, GA

RV Care & Airstreams Maintenance Tips

rv careWhether you think of it as your beach villa, mountain cabin, lake house, office, or even a permanent residence, your RV or Airstream is possibly one of the most expensive investments you’ve ever made. RV care requires all the standard maintenance of a car or truck and so much more. After all, you want to protect your prized possession for years to come. Preventative care can save you a lot of time, money and headache down the road. Below are some of the most important things you can do to keep your RV in tip-top shape.

Inspect the Roof

The old saying “out of sight out of mind” is especially true when it comes to RV and Airstream roofs. They are prone to sun and environmental damage and often neglected until there is a serious issue. When thinking about RV care, it’s important keep your RV/Airstream covered when not in use and inspect the roof every few months. Water leaks can occur through the open seams of the roof edges, skylights, vents or air conditioning, potentially causing extensive water damage and mold issues. Even if you choose to keep your RV covered, it’s vital to apply an appropriate sealant to prevent leaks.

Regular Oil Changes

Most RV’s tend to sit a lot more than your average car so having a regular oil change may not be on the top of your priority list. For routine RV care, it’s recommended to have an oil change every 3000-5000 miles, if the vehicle is used extensively. However, even if it’s not used frequently, it’s suggested that you change the oil at least yearly to prevent excessive wear and tear on the engine. An annual oil change can help save on costly repairs down the road. In addition, remember to change your air, fuel and coolant filters yearly as well.

Keep Your Vents Open

If your RV is unused during the summer, it can become incredibly hot inside. Depending on the climate, the temperature can reach up to 130° F! The heat causes the inside materials to deteriorate, resulting in damage to your seals, floors, wall coverings, etc. Keep your vents open when not in use to promote better airflow and a lower inside temperature. Just make sure your exterior vents are covered to keep the rainwater out.

Maintain Your Wastewater System

It’s extremely important to use proper chemicals for your waste system. Also, make sure that you have adequate amounts of fluid to maintain the system after flushing. Neglecting your RV’s waste system can result in excessive buildup and can cause clogging or even failure of operation, resulting in a smelly, expensive mess.

Polishing & Oxidation Removal

Trailers, RV’s and Airstreams will become significantly oxidized if not polished regularly. It’s tempting to neglect this vital RV care step as traditional methods are extremely labor-intensive. However, with the unique drum-style BuffPro® polisher, your home-away-from-home can look fantastic in about half the time!

BuffPro not only polishes away oxidation quickly, it removes those frustrating swirls and holograms and eliminates light scratches. It also buffs and polishes all surfaces, including metal, stone, gel coat, plastic, and painted surfaces. One tool makes it fool-proof! Curious to see how well BuffPro Works? Road Trip Destinations in the United States

road trip destinationsWhether you enjoy hitting the open road for summer vacation or it’s your full-time lifestyle, nothing beats the freedom and comfort of planning road trip destinations and traveling the country in an RV or Airstream. Want to live by a beach in July, cool down in the mountains in August, and hit the desert in September? With an RV or Airstream, the possibilities are endless! Plus, if you don’t like the “neighborhood,” you can just pack up and go.

Our team at BuffPro thought it would be fun to compile a list of the Top 5 RV road trip destinations and parks in the United States. We soon found out that there are so many amazing options, it was difficult to narrow it down. After much deliberation, we finally came up with 5 categories to get you started on your next adventure: East Coast Beaches, Midwest Great Lakes, Southwest Desert, Western Mountains, and California Wine Country.

East Coast Beach RV Vacation

From Maine to Florida, there are so many incredible beach parks, it’s difficult to choose just one. However, we chose the Ocean Lakes Family Campground in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for several reasons. It’s the largest beach campground on the East Coast and offers over 800 sites across 310 spectacular oceanfront acres.

Each site is large and offers full hookups. In addition, it’s family friendly and even has a water park for the kid in all of us, as well as a golf course, and plenty of nearby restaurants. Myrtle Beach is also home to the famous 200-foot Skywheel, the tallest Ferris wheel on the eastern shore. If you love history, beautiful Charleston is only about 2-hour drive and makes a great day trip.

Great Lakes RV Getaway

If you’ve never been to the shores of Lake Michigan you are in for a treat! The mild weather, sandy beaches, and stunningly blue freshwater lake are a wonderful alternative to an ocean vacation. We chose Grand Haven State Park as our RV home-away-from-home. The park is bordered not only by the pristine lake but also the mouth of the Grand River. You’ll enjoy swimming, snorkeling, canoeing, kayaking, and a fishing pier and lighthouse, as well a boardwalk that allows you to walk or bike along the river for over a mile.

In addition to the amenities that Grand Haven has to offer, there are several other quaint beach towns that are all just a short drive away including Holland, South Haven, and Saugatuck. Each little town has its own unique flavor so there is something for everyone including boutique shopping, live music, art galleries, local breweries, wineries, gastro-dining, farmers markets, the blueberry festival, and nightly light shows. The campground includes 174 paved sites and tends to book up quickly, so it’s recommended that you reserve your spot in advance.

Southwest Desert RV Excursion

Nothing beats the breathtaking scenery that is unique to the desert Southwest. You may even feel like you’re driving in a picture as you make your way to Spanish Trail RV park in Moab, Utah. This is a great destination for those who love roughing it in the outdoors. The camp is close to two very popular parks with incredible views: Arches National Park and Canyonland National Park. You can spend hours or even days hiking and biking the trails of these beautiful parks.

Enjoy whitewater rafting on the Colorado River while relishing the view of the La Sal Mountains. If hiking and rafting are a little too much for you, take a scenic drive around the park and area. After a long day of exploring Moab, head back to camp and enjoy all the creature comforts that you expect, including full utility hookups, free cable TV, and Wi-Fi. Spanish Trail is also known for sparkling clean bathrooms and showers. Other amenities include a dog park, laundromat, and a convenience store.

Mountain Park RV Adventure

Buffalo Crossing RV Park is our 2019 mountain RV road trip destinations. This newer RV park offers generously proportioned sites to allow easy pull-through or back-in of even the largest of Class-A coaches. It’s located just steps away from Yellowstone, the oldest national park in the United States. Yellowstone offers nearly 3500-square miles of wilderness recreation atop a volcanic hot spot. In fact, the park is so large that if spans Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho! It features dramatic canyons, alpine rivers, lush forests, hot springs and gushing geysers, including the most famous of all, Old Faithful. It’s home to hundreds of animal species including bears, wolves, bison, elk, and antelope. It is truly a place everyone should experience once in their lives.

California Wine Country RV Retreat

We chose the Wine Country Resort as our top pick when visiting California wine country. Each RV site comes with its own picnic table, offers full hookups, and can handle rigs up to 70 feet. This all-ages family-friendly resort in the Paso Robles wine region offers boundless activities. Enjoy live music, entertainment, dancing, wine tasting, and outdoor movies in the beautiful wine garden. All the comforts of home are available including cable TV and free Wi-Fi, as well as a pool and a hot tub.

The park is centrally located within walking distance of the Raven Water Park and just a short drive to the famous Hearst Castle in San Simeon. There’s so much to do in the area you’ll enjoy every minute whether you’re hiking, biking, wine tasting, boutique shopping, fine dining, championship golfing, or visiting the local craft breweries.
