Tips & Tricks for Polishing Metal on Airplanes

polishing metal

Are you ready to enhance the appearance of your aviation equipment? Do you want to protect the exterior of your aircraft?

With uneven surfaces, odd angles, and various materials, it can be challenging to polish the metal exterior of your airplane, which is why you need an efficient tool for polishing metal.

The BuffPro Buffer polishes and buffs your aviation equipment in less than half the time of traditional rotary tools. It also protects your aircraft from corrosion and oxidation.

Why BuffPro is Your Choice for Polishing Metal

With ergonomic pistol grips, the BuffPro Buffer is ideal for polishing metal on airplanes. It provides exceptional, all-day comfort and uses modern technology for ease of use and longevity.

The drum action works smoothly around all aircraft surfaces, including metals like aluminum, titanium, and stainless steel. It applies the polishing compound without waste and provides a high-gloss, durable shine without swirls or streaks.

Five Easy Steps for Polishing Metal on Aircrafts

Choose the Right Product

Before you begin, you need to choose products designed specifically for aviation equipment. Mild detergents are not abrasive in nature, which means they are perfect for airplanes. They are also capable of cleaning exterior surfaces, as well as removing oxidation and stains.

Prepare the Aircraft for Polishing

Using warm water and a mild detergent, you need to prepare the exterior surface by cleaning it thoroughly.

By washing the surface, you can remove dirt, oil, and grease that trap under the polishing compound and become embedded in the surface. You can also examine the surface for areas of corrosion and erosion that require repair.

Apply Your Polishing Compound

Once the exterior surface is clean, you may begin by applying a strip or two of polishing compound. It may be best to focus on one small section of the plane at a time.

With BuffPro on the lowest setting, spread the polishing compound over the metal surface. Increase the BuffPro speed setting and work it up and down, back and forth slowly across the surface until you finish polishing.

Finally, you can remove any excess polishing compound with a cotton/flannel cloth. Once you are done, the aircraft will have a shiny, mirror-like finish.

How Often Should You Polish Your Aircraft Metal?

At BuffPro, we recommend polishing metal on your aviation equipment three or four times a year. We also recommend a thorough polish before storing your airplane for an extended period of time.

By following a specific schedule for polishing metal, you can remove water spots, corrosion, and oxidation. You can also eliminate swirls and streaks and restore a high-gloss shine that lasts for months to come.

Private Airplane Exterior Maintenance Tips

airplane exterior maintenance

So, you love to fly and you’re a proud owner of an airplane. Just like your car, your airplane will need a good exterior cleaning from time to time.

Paying someone else to do it can get expensive, so what could you do yourself? Putting your best foot forward on DIY exterior maintenance for your private aircraft produces experience and knowledge, and usually saves a good deal of money. But polishing a plane is no easy feat! Here are some tips to get you started on getting beautiful results!

Choose the Right Product

To start, make sure you use products designed specifically for an aircraft. Automotive waxes and cleaners are simply not designed to withstand the challenges and environment of airplanes. With that in mind, you’ll want to get started by using the mildest products first to clean the exterior, progressing to the most aggressive products that will remove oxidation and stains.

Start with a Clean Surface

First, you’ll want to clean the exterior surface so it’s free from the months of dirt, oil, grease, and bug residue. The mildest products are designed mainly to clean the surface and are not abrasive in nature.

Polish Like a Pro

Now that the surface is clean, you’ll need to move on to polishing. This part of the process removes oxidation and stains using more abrasive compounds. Ideally, you want to have a spotless finish, but not at the cost of removing too much underlying material (especially not paint).

  1. Apply a strip or two of polishing compound.
  2. With the BuffPro on its lowest setting, spread the compound over the target surface.
  3. Increase the BuffPro speed setting and work it up and down, back and forth slowly across the surface until it is polished.
  4. Wipe away any excess polishing compound, and voila, you’re done!

Protect Your Finish

The BuffPro buffer and our one-of-a-kind polishing system will give you a protective mirror shine, and it will remove old swirl marks and holograms for good!

Why Buffpro is the Best Choice for Your Airplane’s Exterior Maintenance

The BuffPro Buffer can help you create a perfect polish on your aviation equipment in up to half the time of traditional buffers. When you’re talking about a project as large as an airplane, that makes a big difference! What’s more, you’ll want to use a buffer that offers ease of use and comfort, even during extended use.

The BuffPro Buffer has ergonomic pistol grips to offer exceptional, all-day comfort. And, it uses smart technology for ease of use and longevity.

The BuffPro Buffer is the only one of its kind. It is the only electrically operated drum style buffer on the market and anyone can learn to use the BuffPro within a few minutes. Because it was designed by a professional, it gets the job done faster, it’s more comfortable for all-day-use, and it never leaves swirl marks behind. New Drone Laws and Regulations and Aviation Safety

How New Done Laws and Regulations are Helping Aviation Safety

done laws and regulationsEvery year more drones that take to the skies and share airspace with aircraft. While the pace of drone ownership seems to be slowing, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) estimated that as of December 2018 there were about 1.25 million drones identified as aircraft models. With the increase in these unmanned aerial vehicles, new drone laws and regulations have been introduced that help ensure aviation safety as drones are integrated into the national airspace system.

Updated Rules for Flying Drones

In January 2019, new recreational drone rules were proposed that affect Part 107 to help balance safety risks without inhibiting advances in technology and operations.

No matter if you’re a professional pilot, recreational flier, modeler, the following are some of the basic safety guidelines that all drone operators must follow:

  • Know if you need a pilot certificate
  • Register your drone with the FAA
  • Always keep your drone within eyesight
  • Avoid other aircraft and obstacles
  • Notify the control tower if you will be flying within five miles of an airport
  • Don’t fly in bad weather
  • Know and follow privacy laws and restrictions
  • Follow local laws and ordinances before flying over sensitive infrastructure or private property

Plane Detailing Tips and Tricks

Plane Polishing
The BuffPro Buffer can help you create a perfect polish on your aviation equipment in up to half the time of traditional buffers.

Plane Detailing Extends the Life of Your Aircraft

Are you looking to improve the appearance of your aircraft and protect its exterior? Whether flying through the skies or parked on the tarmac, planes are affected by weather conditions that can contribute to exterior damage. But how does plane detailing work to extend the life of your aircraft?

Sunlight and UV rays can speed the rate of corrosion and paint fading on any metal surface. As a plane owner, hanger owner, or corporate aviation firm, preventative measures serve to protect your airplane’s (or your aviation fleet’s) finish from the destructive effects of weather damage. Polishing the exterior of your aircraft will not only keep your plane in pristine condition, but it will also likely increase the life of your paint and reduce corrosion and oxidation.

In the past, polishing a plane was labor intensive with expensive rubbing compounds and rotary equipment that left swirl marks. BuffPro offers a non-rotary, swirl-free electric buffer and an innovative polishing system that will give you a protective mirror shine in half the time.

No matter the age of your aircraft, the following tips and tricks for plane detailing with the BuffPro line of aviation products will help you get the mirror finish you want:

#1 Prepare the Surface for Polishing

Using warm water and a mild detergent, clean the surface you wish to polish. Washing the exterior of the aircraft removes residues and contaminants that can get trapped under the polishing compound and become embedded into the surface.

Taking the time to prepare the exterior also allows you to examine the surface condition for areas of corrosion and erosion that need repair.

Finally, tape off the leading edges of the wings and any ports to keep polish from entering.

#2 Apply Polishing Compound

Next, apply a strip or two of polish onto the surface you will work on. We recommend working on one small section of the plane at a time. For example, focus first on the nose and then work your way to the rear of the fuselage.

Try applying the polish in a hashtag pattern across the surface, horizontally first and then vertically.

#3 Use an Electric Buffer for a Professional Finish

When using the BuffPro buffer, start spreading the polish on the lowest setting over the area you’re working on. Once you’ve spread the polish, increase the buffer’s speed, and slowly move it back and forth across the surface until it’s shiny or the polish compound is used up.

Lastly, wipe away any excess polish. When you have finished, your aircraft should have a mirror finish and protection from corrosion.

How Often is Plane Detailing Recommended?

We recommend polishing your aircraft about three times a year or whenever you notice cloudiness, oxidation, or water spots on the exterior surface. We also suggest a thorough polish before putting your plane in storage for an extended period.

By following this schedule, you can remove spots and other surface damage before they become problems and ensure continued longevity for your aircraft.

BuffPro is All You Need to Keep Your Aviation Fleet Buffed & Polished

With all the curves, angles, and different materials, polishing a plane isn’t easy. This is especially true when attempted by hand or with a traditional rotary buffer.

The BuffPro polisher drum action works smoothly around all surfaces of your aircraft. Also, we have designed the polishing compound for use on painted surfaces, metals, fiberglass, gel-coated surfaces, resins, and more. Furthermore, the polisher efficiently applies less compound without waste and doesn’t leave swirls and streaks. Your plane will have the high-gloss, durable shine that you want. And, with the BuffPro buffer, you can complete the job in 50% less time than it takes with a traditional rotary buffer.

To give your plane a professional shine, order your kit online today (we have super savings on BuffPro starter kits). If you have questions about which kit to start with, call our customer service professionals for assistance at 1-800-699-4160. We are standing by ready to help!
