The Best Tactics for Marine Detailing

BuffPro marine detailing with our new compounding wool pad that can potentially replace 800-2,000 grain sanding.

Most boat owners know that maintenance cost for their crafts doesn’t come cheaply. Consider that the average cost of professionally detailing a boat can range to $125 per foot, depending on its condition. And marine crafts larger than 40 feet can see 20% to 40% higher prices. Also, professional boat cleaning companies may have charges for additional cleaning services. However, the truth is that marine detailing doesn’t have to be expensive if you are willing to invest some time.

At BuffPro, we specialize in providing products to help make your life as a boat owner easier. And we know the top maintenance tips for extending your boat’s lifespan and making your marine detailing efforts easier. These include:

  • Washing your boat with high-quality marine soap or detergent
  • Rinsing your boat after every use to remove salt residue
  • Treating tough to remove stains and dirt
  • Investing in a professional-style buffer and buffing pads

Marine Detailing Like a Pro with BuffPro

As the most versatile and unique product of its kind, the electric BuffPro buffer is easy to use and gives a professional, swirl-free finish. It also offers a cleaner process than other polishing methods.

The BuffPro buffer is ideal for marine detailing because it removes oxidation. And it provides a high-gloss shine in half the time of conventional rotary buffers. With pistol grip handles, the buffer minimizes awkward wrist positioning for easy use and longevity.

Feel the Satisfaction of a Job Done Even Faster

BuffPro is proud to introduce our new compounding wool pad. It’s 100% wool and can potentially replace 800-2,000 grain sanding. That means you can reduce or eliminate sanding steps before the cutting, polishing, and finishing stages. It works with your most aggressive compounds, so now you can get the job done even faster. And you can use the pad on the following crafts, vehicles, and surfaces:

  • Boats
  • Airstreams and other RVs
  • Aircraft metal
  • Fiberglass
  • Stone
  • Raw metal
  • Polished concrete

It’s also ideal for gel coat repairs and metal polishing. And it’s suitable for pre-finishing prep work. After buffing, the pad easily washes out with soap and water and resists compound saturation.

Restoring Shine to Fiberglass Boats

polishing fiberglassAbout half of all the boats in the US are made from light composites like fiberglass. Not only is it stronger than wood, but it’s also a considerably cheaper alternative. To keep your watercraft in tip-top shape, polishing fiberglass is key to making sure you can get years of enjoyment out of your boat.

The outermost layer of a fiberglass boat’s hull is usually covered in a special resin called gelcoat. The gelcoat protects the hull and gives it its color and shine. Over time, exposure to the elements can erode the relatively soft surface of the gelcoat, leaving it dull and chalky. Fortunately, the gloss can usually be restored.

Here are some steps and helpful tips for polishing fiberglass to help you restore that “brand new” look:

Clean It Up

Wash the hull of your boat as you normally would. Adding a cup of detergent to a gallon of warm water and using a sponge usually does the trick. If mildew is present, add some bleach to your detergent solution. Don’t worry too much about difficult stains like fish blood and waterline scum – the next steps will take care of them.

Polishing the Fiberglass Surface

Polishing a surface is an abrasive process, and not one that results in a coating. Polishing fiberglass cleans the surface by removing the pitted surface rather than coating it.

The polishing process includes applying a strip of the polishing compound onto the surface of the hull. Then, spread the polish with your electric buffer, increasing the speed setting, and slowly moving it back and forth across the surface until glassy. Finally, wipe away any excess polish.

Use Rubbing Compound as Needed

More abrasive than polishing compound, rubbing compound should only be used as needed. If the polishing compound does not provide the results you want visually, rubbing compound can then be used. Select a rubbing compound formulated for fiberglass and use it exactly like polish.

Polishing compound may be needed after the use of rubbing compound to smooth out the gelcoat. So, repeat this step if you need to, or skip this step and go on to the next if polishing compound alone did the trick.

Coat with Wax

After polishing, apply a coat of wax to protect the surface and improve the gloss. Wax also has some restorative properties if the condition of the gelcoat isn’t too weathered to begin with. The best way to prolong the glossy look of a boat is to properly wax the gelcoat starting when the boat is new. If you do this and maintain regular waxing, gelcoat can retain its gloss for years to come.

Use your electric buffer to spread the wax evenly. Wait until it dries a little and gets cloudy. It’s important to allow the wax enough time to set, so it’ll be able to protect the gelcoat.

Buff It to Completion

After the wax dries and gets a somewhat hazy look, but before the wax gets too hard, buff the surface. The shine should really start to pop as you buff away the cloudiness of the wax.

And voila! Your fiberglass boat will be shining like new!

When You Want Your Boat to Look the Best, Use the BuffPro Buffer

As you can see from the steps above, this process requires going over the entire surface of your boat’s exterior multiple times. The advantages of using an electrical buffer should be clear. Not only is the entire process labor-intensive, especially the bigger your boat is, but using a power buffer like BuffPro will result in a quick, smooth finish every time.

Not only will BuffPro provide a superior shine in HALF the time as traditional buffers and never leaves swirl marks behind, but it is also exceptionally comfortable for extended use with its ergonomic pistol grips.

Order your BuffPro, pads and polishing compound today and get ready to create a perfect shine!

How to Winterize A Boat

how to winterize a boatWinter is just around the corner, which means it’s that time of year again when the question about how to winterize a boat comes up, as boat owners take steps to ensure their craft survives the off-season.

If you don’t plan on spending the colder weeks somewhere a little less chilly, making sure that your boat is in the right condition to be stored is vital. Someone who fails to winterize a boat can end up with thousands of dollars in repairs, but preparing your boat before the winter gets tough can save you a lot.

How to winterize a boat? Here is a quick list of what you should look at before parking your boat for the winter:

Engine

One important thing to remember to do is to fog the engine cylinders. Aerosol fogging solutions cover the inside of your engine to prevent damage until boating weather returns. If you aren’t sure which solution will work best for your boat, check with your engine manufacturer. Without fogging the engine, corrosion can eat away at the engine, covering the cylinders, pistons, and rings with harsh muck that can damage the engine.

In addition, for inboards and stern-drives, it is important to drain the engine. By simply allowing the water to drain completely before winter, you can prevent water in the cooling chambers that can freeze, expand, and crack the blocks and manifolds of the engine. Damage from frozen water in the engine can be costly to repair.

Fuel and Oil

By doing a simple fuel treatment with a stabilizer, you can prevent your carburetors and fuel injectors from becoming clogged with varnish deposits that are damaging to fuel systems. Pennzoil Fuel Stabilizer, PRI-G, and Stabil are ideal options for fuel treatment. After adding it to the fuel, run the engine for 10 minutes or so to be sure stabilized fuel circulates throughout the engine.

Another important task is changing the oil to get rid of moisture and keep corrosion from damaging your boat. While it seems small, failing to change the oil can lead to loss of power, declining fuel economy, and even possible engine failure.

Clean & Polish the Exterior

Another way to encourage your boat to live longer is to pay attention to the exterior. Boats, especially those in saltwater, can experience some water damage. When the boat is pulled out of the water, it is important to clean the bottom to remove anything that might cause damage. Then, clean and buff the boat.

When you plan to winterize a boat, look for a product that will remove corrosion and improve pitting as well as will remove oxidation on boat covers.

The marine environment can be harsh! By preventing water deposits from building up, you will keep your boat running longer and looking great as seen in the before (left) and after (right) photos below.how to winterize a boat

Storage

In addition to taking care of your boat, it is important to find a safe place to store it for the winter. First, make sure to invest in a boat cover in order to protect the boat from winter weather or exposure to dirt, dust, grime, or moisture. After the boat is covered, storing it in the place that works best for your boat and your budget is important. There are pros and cons to storing the boat outside, on a dry rack, or in a storage unit, but exploring the possible storage solutions is crucial to keeping the boat safe during the winter.

While there are a variety of other things you can do to protect your boat, making sure to take of the engine, exterior, fluids, and storage plan is a simple checklist to help you jumpstart the winter preparation. The best way to start off the spring with an enjoyable boat trip is to take care of your boat in the cold weather.

When You Want Your Boat to Look the Best, Choose the BuffPro Buffer

Polishing marine equipment can be a tedious job. You want your boat to have that clean, deep shine that it had when it was new. But the hours it takes to even get an inconsistent product can make it seem like polishing the boat isn’t worth the effort.

With the BuffPro Buffer, you can polish a boat in up to half the time of other rotary-type buffers. The BuffPro can be safely used on all boat surfaces – bare metal, painted surfaces, fiberglass, gel coat and plastic. One tool for the entire job.

Good News Boat Owners! Boat Maintenance Just Got Easier

boat maintenanceKeeping your boat looking its best while battling the elements is one of the biggest frustrations when it comes to boat maintenance. There is nothing more exasperating than spending a hot, sunny weekend buffing and polishing your boat only to be left with annoying swirl marks, holograms, and patches of stubborn oxidation. It’s tempting to just give up and neglect this important step in boat maintenance, but the result can be very costly.

There is a way to care for your boat’s gel coat, fiberglass, metal, and plastic easily in half the time with half the supplies and less fatigue – and you’ll get a swirl-free showroom shine every time!

The Secret to Buffing & Polishing in ½ the Time

Boats have come a long way since they were made from papyrus and wood 8,000 years ago. Modern watercraft are now mostly constructed from fiberglass, gel coat, and aluminum – with these modern materials come modern problems such as corrosion, oxidation, cracking, and pitting. So how do you keep your entire boat – even the inside surfaces – clean, shiny, and protected with less effort? With the BuffPro® drum-style buffer.

The BuffPro system is superior to traditional rotary buffers because not only does it remove oxidation, corrosion and light scratches in half the time, it’s impossible to make new swirl marks and holograms, and it removes old ones. Additionally, BuffPro was designed by a professional detailer with handles that minimize awkward wrist positioning for comfort and speed. Restoring your boat to a glossy shine quickly means more time on the open water!

The Importance of Buffing & Removing Oxidation

All water and weather, whether it be salt or fresh water, sun, wind, or rain, will affect your boat in many ways, including discoloration and deterioration of the fiberglass, gel coat, plastic, metal, and trim components. If you are in a saltwater climate, not only is the water harsh, but the air and year-round sun are extremely hard on your marine equipment. It’s important to maintain your boat in these conditions more often.

Buffing and polishing regularly will keep the detrimental effects of the weather at bay and stop unnecessary aging, oxidation, surface cracking, and pitting and keep your boat looking its best while retaining its value. We know firsthand – if you can do it frustration-free with super results, you’ll want to do it more often.

Also, if you have fiberglass floors, plexiglass windows, plastic headlights, or a cabin with fiberglass or stone countertops, doors, and sills, you can use it here too. Remove scratches and oxidation and give it a like-new shine throughout. You’ll feel like you’ve bought a new boat and want to show it off!

“Being on a boat that’s moving through the water, it’s so clear. Everything falls into place in terms of what’s important and what’s not.” – James Taylor

The Key to Superior Boat Care

boat careThere are few things more exhilarating than cruising along a lake or hitting the high seas in a boat. It’s no wonder that there are approximately 12 million registered boats in the United States! Whether it’s fishing, water skiing, traveling, or all the above, boating is one of the country’s most popular recreational activities. No matter how or where you use your boat, simple boat care and the proper maintenance can avoid expensive repairs in the future and make your boating adventures safe and relaxing.

Boat Maintenance Checklist

Boat maintenance is like automobile maintenance in many ways. There are some basic items that require upkeep by the owner and a few items that need professional servicing. The most important thing you can do as a boat owner is to keep it clean, well lubricated, and covered. Use a marine-grade grease as it’s long lasting and provides added protection against rust and corrosion, keep canvas, covers, and upholstery dry and clean to prevent mold and mildew, and keep the bilge clean so you can be aware of leaking fuel or fluids and avoid a clogged bilge pump.

Annual boat care such as oil changes and painting the hull bottom are also important to the upkeep of your boat, as is regular buffing and polishing of the fiberglass and gel coat that will quickly oxidize if not washed and waxed regularly.

A basic checklist for boat care includes:

  • Maintain the engine and lubricate mechanical parts
  • Take care of the hull and topsides
  • Service the electrical system and batteries
  • Clean and protect the canvas and upholstery
  • Monitor, flush and service the bilge pumps and plumbing
  • Check wiper blades, prop, running lights, and anchors for damage and function
  • Service the HVAC, heater, and appliances as needed
  • Flush the engine/motor with fresh water after every use in saltwater

In general, you can expect to pay about 10% of the cost of your boat in annual maintenance. Neglecting basic care can be very costly, especially if you use it in saltwater environments.

Salt Water’s Effect on Boats

All elements can affect a boat’s condition but if you are a saltwater boater, your boat will require extra TLC. That’s because salt water and sea air are extremely harsh on marine equipment. In fact, salt-laden air and water are some of the worst contributors to corrosion and can rapidly cause fiberglass deterioration, oxidation, and pitting.

Since engines are made of metal, they are susceptible to fast pitting and rusting and salt expedites that process. One vital action you need to take after boating in saltwater is to flush your boat’s engine with fresh water to rinse both the engine and the cooling system. Further, saltwater will cause the fiberglass on your boat to fade, crack, and scratch faster compared to freshwater, so it’s important to regularly rinse the hull. It’s also crucial to keep metals and electrical wiring sealed and as dry as possible to avoid damage. Finally, using antifouling paint can act as a barrier between salt and the hull which can prevent weakening and corrosion of metal.

Oxidation Removal & Swirl-Free Polishing for Boat Care

Whether you’re a freshwater or saltwater boater, oxidation removal is a time-consuming chore that can be less than enjoyable. Fortunately, there is a fast, easy, affordable way to make your boat look like brand-new in half the time you’re used to. The unique BuffPro® buffer/polisher removes oxidation, corrosion, and swirl-marks and provides a high-gloss shine in less than half the time of traditional rotary buffer/polishers.

The unique drum-style buffer was designed to be simple, lightweight, and comfortable to use. Best of all, it removes old swirl marks and holograms and makes it impossible to create new ones. BuffPro is also safe on metal, paint, plastic, fiberglass and gel coat. Check out our short how-to videos and see how easy it is – even for a beginner – to get a perfect shine the first time.

Top 5 Midwest Boating Destinations

Marine polishing“Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing − absolutely nothing − half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.”  If you’re a boat lover you can relate to this famous quote by Kenneth Grahame from The Wind in the Willows. Afterall, nothing is more exhilarating than planning  perfect boating destinations and feeling the water and breeze on your skin as you travel the oceans, rivers, and lakes by boat.

To help you plan your summer fun, we at BuffPro® came up with our Top 5 Midwest Boating Destinations to make your boating vacation a memorable one. Just imagine the wind in your hair as you read and daydream about the following fresh-water options.

A Boater’s Paradise – Traverse City, Michigan

Located in northern Michigan, Traverse City’s clear blue Lake Michigan waters beckon boaters, fisherman, and beachgoers as the first of our boating destinations. Fishing multiple lakes for king salmon, perch, trout, whitefish, and walleye is a fisherman’s dream come true. Those who love to boat, tube, waterski, dive, sail, wakeboard, windsurf and beach-it could stay forever. The pristine lakes and fresh water make this part of the Great Lakes region like no other. In fact, Boating Magazine named Traverse City one of its “Ten Best Places to Live and Boat.” For boaters, both power and sail, the combination of Lake Michigan and 26 large inland lakes offer a perfect boating destination.

Along with boating, there is much to see and do in and around Traverse City, including the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which towers 400 feet above Lake Michigan. In 2011, Good Morning America named it “The Most Beautiful Place in America.” Grand Traverse Bay also shares the same latitude as Italy’s Piedmont Region and Boudreaux in France, making it one of the Travel Channel’s top 10 cities for wine snobs. This same 45th parallel also makes for some of the longest summer days in the US, giving you more time to enjoy boating and all kinds of water recreation. Traverse City is home of the famous National Cherry Festival and one of most agriculturally diverse regions of the US. It’s no wonder it was named one of Bon Appetit’s Top 5 Food Towns in 2010.

Windy City Sailing – Chicago, Illinois

boating destinationsAlso located on the shores of Lake Michigan, Chicago combines both the excitement of one of the nation’s largest cities with the beauty of the Great Lakes. Enjoy world class sailing against the backdrop of the city’s famous skyline. Some places you’ll want to check out include Montrose Harbor and Beach, the epitome of the waterfront summertime boating life. Enjoy a bustling marina, restaurants, live music and a large beach that offers a beautiful view of the Windy City.

If you love fishing, head north of Chicago to Lake County, a great place to catch perch, trout and king salmon. July is a great month for boating in Chicago starting with the Race to Mackinac on July 11th. It’s the longest and oldest freshwater sailing race in the world. You can watch teams set sail at Navy Pier by the Chicago Lighthouse and never leave your own boat. On July 25th, there’s the Chicago Scene boat party, which is the largest water social scene of the summer. If you’re in the area in August, you won’t want to miss the Chicago Air and Water Show. Catch stunt planes and the Blue Angels from the comfort of your boat and away from the crowds. Other boating excursions include overnight trips to Michigan, or for a different view of Chicago, take day trips up and down the south bank of the Chicago River.

Shallow Fishing – Lake Winnebago, Wisconsin

One of the most popular boating destinations in inland Wisconsin, Lake Winnebago is a shallow freshwater lake and a fisherman’s paradise. In fact, in June 2010, Oshkosh hosted a fishing tournament that still holds the Guinness World Record as the largest in history! It’s no wonder many fishermen consider it one the best places in the nation to catch walleye. Other species abound, including bluegill, bass, pike, perch and catfish. The largest lake located entirely within the state, it has 88 miles of shoreline, a maximum depth of 21 feet and contains several islands to explore along its west shore.

If fishing isn’t your thing, not to worry. There are many things to do all over the picturesque, nature-inspired area including boating for fun, hiking, biking, water parks, a bustling nightlife with plenty of live music; museums, outlet malls, and a zoo in Oshkosh. Auto enthusiasts will also be thrilled with the classic car museum in nearby Fond Du Lac.

1150 Miles of Shoreline – Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri

It may be hard to believe but Lake of the Ozarks has 1,150 miles of coastline – more than California! This unique man-made lake is only 75 years old but is one of the most popular boating destinations in the Midwest. It’s a great place for tubing, waterskiing or just cruising the endless shoreline. Whether you like fine dining and vibrant nightlife, family-friendly fun, or just relaxing, Lake of the Ozarks has something for everyone. The small towns up and down the rugged coast offer arcades, ice cream shops and unique stores, as well as many fantastic boat-in restaurants where you can dock your boat and relax waterside.

If you’re visiting in late July, you won’t want to miss Aquapalooza, the lake’s largest family-friendly boating event held July 20th – all boaters invited! Live music and activities keep the fun flowing all day long. August 24-25th is the 31st Annual Lake of the Ozarks Shootout. Powerboat Magazine calls it one of the “must-see boating events” in the nation. It is the largest unsanctioned race in the United States with more than 100 racers and 100,000 spectators. Not ready to be done with boating fun? End your summer with a bang Labor Day weekend watching multiple firework displays from your boat and enjoy the last long days of summer on the water.

500 Lakes & More – Brainerd, Minnesota

Minnesota is known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” and is a dream come true for the serious boater. We chose the Brainerd area in our boating destinations list simply because it’s comprised of more than 500 lakes and beautiful scenery. You could boat here all summer and never run out of places to explore – no wonder Minnesotans call it the “heart of lake country.” The larger lakes offer opportunities for tubing, skiing and wakeboarding. If you want a quiet more relaxing experience, enjoy your boat or paddle a canoe on some of the smaller lakes or down the Mississippi or Gull Rivers. There are waterfront restaurants galore that make for an easy, relaxing day of boating, dining, and socializing. If you’re wanting fun things to do on land, Brainerd offers many natural areas for hiking, biking, and walking, an International Raceway, water parks, breweries, shopping, golf, and a wildlife sanctuary that will take your breath away.
